In true form, our Government dithered over the shocking news up to 50,000 British women have been fitted with potentially lethal breast implants from now-defunct firm PIP.

While the French rushed to fund the routine removal of all faulty implants, British women were left in limbo while our Health Department blathered on about there being no evidence to back their removal.

No evidence? So what does it call the eight cases of cancer, including one which was fatal, and the higher-than- average risk that these implants will rupture, spewing out a substance which is so damn toxic it’s used to weather-proof bricks?

Does it not give a damn that doctors are lining up to condemn the PIP implants as not being fit to go anywhere near a human body, let alone in one?

While thousands of women voluntarily filled their bodies with these cheap implants for cosmetic reasons, thousands of others relied on them for breast reconstruction after traumatic mastectomies.

Whatever the reason, no woman should be allowed to suffer without decisive and immediate help from our health service.

I am fed up with the Health Department playing roulette with women’s health. Why do they let cowboy cosmetic surgeons continue to operate? Why aren’t the substances pumped into women’s bodies regulated as tightly as every other medical procedure?

Get your act together Andrew Lansley, before any more lives are lost.
